Extended Day (Ages 5 to 6)
(THIRD YEAR/KINDERGARTEN YEAR)
The child has a fundamental role in the construction of the human being." - Dr. Maria Montessori
The culmination of the Primary class is our Extended Day program, which is typically considered the kindergarten year. The children, usually five-years-old, are ready to extend their morning work time. Their hard work of the last two years culminates in the third year in an explosion of language, reading, and writing. They balance their time between academic pursuits and social interests.
There is abundant academic, social and emotional growth, and well as increasing independence and self-awareness. The children begin their move toward abstract thought as they are introduced to more complex works, and progressively more advanced materials lessons.
Additionally, at this age, the children have developed skills to be leaders in the classroom. They serve as role models and mentors for their younger peers. This also reinforces the child’s sense of autonomy and self-confidence.
During the afternoon work cycle, the children are expected to focus on complex and lengthy lessons especially involving the Montessori writing, reading, geography, science, and math materials. Self-discipline and independence are encouraged, and expected, at this age. Children in the Extended Day program also have art studio, theater, and afternoon Spanish. These children bring lunch and continue their day until 3:00 p.m.
We know kindergartners are capable of so much more than the expectations the average kindergarten classroom may have of them, and our Extended Day program is paramount to their growth, success, and development.
