And at that moment, a star was born. The Rock soon became a beloved cornerstone of the school community. Countless end-of-year and graduation photos have featured The Rock, and many alums consider the day they were able to scale the stone of over five feet tall a milestone of their years at Alcuin. Today, The Rock sits happily on the Alcuin Main Campus lawn on Oak Park and Superior.

To pay tribute to our past and continue to celebrate our future, the decision was made to name each of our twelve classrooms in honor of The Rock by choosing from rock-inspired names that emphasize growth and purpose. Alcuin’s Director of Education for ages 6-14, Nicole Cochrane, spearheaded the project and stated, “The idea to rename our classrooms came from the desire to unite our two campuses and pay homage to The Rock. Inspired by our mascot, we took our students’ love of geology and gave everyone a shared story and vocabulary across levels with rock-themed classroom names. The Montessori three Planes of Development aligned perfectly with the three types of rocks (igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary), as if it were meant to be.”

During Alcuin’s first Community Day, an initiative that is part community service and part pep rally, the classroom names were randomly selected from a list of various rocks including igneous for the 0-6 classrooms which celebrates energy, curiosity, first formations, and foundational skills, metamorphic rocks for the 6-12-year-old classrooms which celebrates perseverance, collaboration, and moral reasoning, and finally sedimentary rocks for the 12-14-year-olds which celebrates reflection, integration, voice, and contribution. And did you know it is a perfect complement to Montessori’s Peace Education?

A lifelong pacifist, Dr. Maria Montessori believed that by raising generations of children who embraced living respectfully and having peaceful lives, they would contribute to future world peace. Dr. Montessori felt that with each passing generation, the hope for a more peaceful world grew and grew. After spending a lifetime working with children and developing her pedagogy, She understood the link between the education of our younger generations and world peace. However, this growth and evolution doesn’t just happen naturally. Dr. Montessori believed that children could contribute to peace, global citizenship, social justice, equity, and equality, but they must be shown lessons to create this change. We must aid the child in their commitment to peace and understanding.

At Alcuin, peace education is a major component of the classroom as the ideals of peace are interwoven throughout the curriculum and the space from Grace and Courtesy to the peace table to conflict resolution skills. For instance, peace can begin at the youngest ages with simple lessons such as greeting others, saying please and thank you, or tending to classroom pets and plants. Adults model peaceful and respectful behavior in the classroom, and older children serve as leaders and role models for younger children. Peace is studied more in-depth and abstractly with elementary and middle school children as they learn about cultures, social justice, equity, equality, volunteerism, and fundamental human rights.

During the International Day of Peace, the Primary, Elementary, and Middle School children gathered to sing songs for peace, designed art and banners, while at our Roosevelt Campus, our Toddlers had a peace parade, and our Infants enjoyed songs centered around peace. The school is very pretty, and the food is very good. The courtyard has a wide variety of plants. The food they served was exquisite. They had beans, rice, slaw, vegetables, chicken, stuffed tomatoes, fried plantains, and iced tea.

After that, we went back to Spanish classes, and we did that until 3:00 p.m. After that, we had an hour of Latin dance class and then returned home to relax and get ready for dinner with our host families.

This is Jeff. It has been a whirlwind of activity so far. Everyone is really enjoying themselves. The students were split into three different groups for Spanish classes and, from the sound of the laughter coming from the classrooms, they were all enjoying themselves. The weather here is hot and humid, but we can't possibly complain after escaping the Chicago chill. This is a great bonding experience for all of us and we are looking forward to the coming adventures. The students will be taking turns writing updates each day, so please be on the lookout for those.

Jeff

Welcome to Taara, Eliza, Adrian, and Indie’s recap of Day 3 in Costa Rica.

We started our day with our host mother and a yummy breakfast of scrambled eggs, toast and very delicious jam (guava and cinnamon pear). The bus arrived early so it was a mad dash out the door, but we picked everyone up and got to CRLA in plenty of time for class. We learned a lot, had a break then learned some more. In our classes, we played a lot of games and it’s a lot of fun.

For lunch, we had lasagna, salad, and garlic bread with iced tea which was all delicious. Then it was more language class. We closed the school day with a cooking class outdoors in the beautiful garden. We made empanadas which were extra excellent. After that, we went home and played with our house dog, Sally. She’s so cute!

Before dinner, we walked with Johanna to the nearby supermarket for some delicious fruit. We sat outside and watched the world go by. In that same mall is a small pet store and we visited an adorable kitten. We took a short detour on the way home and saw more neighborhood kittens.

At home again, we played with Sally in our beautiful backyard and took some pictures of the valley as the sun went down and the city lights came on. For dinner, which was a casserole of sorts, and a salad was quite delicious. Señora’s adult daughter, Paola, joined us. She was very friendly and sweet. After that, we relaxed and retired to our rooms for much needed quiet time and sleep.

We’re excited for tomorrow.

Pura Vida!

Costa Rica: May 5th Update

Welcome to our third Costa Rica update! It has been so much fun seeing the class wholeheartedly dive into the culture, language, and experience. The weather continues to be sticky and humid, but that has not put a damper on anyone’s spirit here. Today was exciting as the class graduated from their CRLA classes and received their certificates. It is a testament to their hard work over the last three days and how, in such little time, their Spanish has flourished even more so.

Everyone is brimming with excitement as they are busy packing and looking forward to our journey to Tortuguero, on Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast, tomorrow. The anticipation is palpable, and we cannot wait to take in the beauty of the land, as well as see monkeys and sloths and any other critters who may want to say hello—even though we will, undoubtedly, be sleepy at our 6:00 a.m. departure time.

Today’s update is brought to you by the letters CR as well as Clem, Iris, Jay, Phoebe, and Simone.

Con pura vida,

Alex

Bright and early at 7:00 am, we hopped out of bed. The start of day four was going smoothly. We had strawberry (fresa) banana pancakes. They were AMAZING. We got on the bus over to CRLA (Costa Rican Language Academy) for Spanish classes from 9:00 to 10:30 am. We then has a break/snack time, then more Spanish classes till 12 pm (lunch). We had chicken, rice, and vegetables. They were deliciosa (delicious).

After lunch we learned cool games to play with the orphans on Tuesday. The games were super fun! The first was hopping from start to finish in a sack, a relay with our teammates. The second was rock paper scissors tag, but with a giant, dwarf, and a wizard. After that we played hoodwinker where we would wink at people and they would have to fall down dead. Next we played a jump rope game where we had to jump in a specific pattern.

At last it was time for our graduation, we all lined up and got our certificates. Then we headed out, jumping on the bus. We then went to a shop to buy some souvenirs. It was one large shop. It had everything in it, from jewelry all the way to wooden boxes. We stayed there for a little bit. When we finished, we got back on the bus and Ms. Johanna told us our dorm assignments for the lodge.

When we were back at the host houses, we started packing then got distracted and started playing taco-cat-goat-cheese-pizza (TCGCP), THEN, we ate dinner and actually packed.

We’re looking forward to another great day!

- Clem, Iris, Jay, Phoebe, and Simone

This update was composed by Luke, Julien, and Kian.

Today we all had fun. We had an early wake up at 5:00, which had us all tired. The large bus arrived, which we all liked because it was comfortable and had air conditioning. We started by driving up the mountains and into a cloud forest. We descended, passing through lots of dense jungle.

We then passed through rural Costa Rica, stopping along the way for some delicious breakfast, and then we continued on until we got to the boat dock. We boarded our boat for the hour-long boat ride to get to the Evergreen Lodge.

At the lodge we dropped off our stuff at our cabins, but not before we had an amazing ginger welcome drink. Soon after arriving, we got into the boat again and traveled to Pachira Lodge for a guided nature hike, seeing armadillos, monkeys, and lots of spiders. After our hike, we took the boat back to our lodge and swam in the pool for an hour before changing and eating a delicious dinner.

This is Jeff.

It was indeed an epic, beautiful, and long journey. The boat ride to Tortuguero and our Evergreen Lodge was incredibly beautiful. We saw many birds and even stopped along the way to watch a howler monkey feeding. Our guide, Valentine, is incredibly knowledgeable about Costa Rican history, flora, and fauna. Along with the animals listed above, we also saw a three-toed sloth.

We’ll be getting up very early tomorrow morning in order to be at the dock for a 5:30 am journey through Tortuguero National Park. The weather was not as hot today as expected, but it is definitely very humid. Everyone is in great spirits and we are all happy, healthy, and hydrated. And yes, we saw a LOT of animals! There were parrots, macaws, a toucan, hummingbirds, Caymans, monkeys, an ant eater up in a tree, butterflies, Jesus Christ lizards (named that because they can walk on water), iguanas and spiders. Our tour guide, Valentine, knows a lot about the animals and their habitat and shared a lot of information with us.

After our tour, we had breakfast. There was an assortment of foods like fruit, cereal, eggs and ham. After eating, we all went to the pool and swam for HOURS. It was so much fun! Then we freshened up and headed to lunch.

In the afternoon, we took the boat into town and heard about the man who fought to save this area for the sea turtles. We walked on the main strip and got smoothies, ice cream and coconuts. We also shopped for souvenirs. We took a boat back and had free time. At 6:00 p.m. we went for a night hike with Valentine. It gets dark early here. We saw a couple of frogs and lots of spiders. We also noticed a lot of lightening bugs. They are bigger here and stay bright for longer, it seems. Then we had dinner which was beans, rice and veggies. We showered, hung out and went to bed on the early side. We were all very tired.

The next day, we woke up at 6:30 p.m. which seemed late after the day before. We packed our bags because we are headed back to San Jose. At breakfast, the omelet bar is very good. The watermelon, pineapple and papaya are also yummy. We relaxed a little after breakfast and then walked around the lodge. We saw a porcupine in a tree! And a position dart frog that was so cute. There was also a family of Capuchin monkeys eating flowers and jumping from tree to tree.

After breakfast, it was a boat ride back to the bus that would take us back to San Jose. The boat ride felt so much shorter this time than on the way to the lodge. We got off at the boat launch and it was SO HOT! We got off the boat and onto the bus for a long drive over the mountains and through the cloud forest. We stopped for lunch and then kept on driving. We got to our host families where we relaxed, ate dinner, and showered. And finally, we went to bed.

PURA VIDA!

We can’t believe we'll be home the day after tomorrow. Each day thus far has been simultaneously long and short, jam-packed with outings and events. Luke said, “I wish the trip was two weeks long!” Clearly, they are having a good time.

Today’s vibe was different, however, in that we went to visit Pueblito Costa Rica. The group, while still jovial, had several moments of introspection throughout the day. Pueblito permanently houses over 100 children and adolescents who are there by recommendation of the National Children’s Trust (PANI), Costa Rica’s equivalent of DCFS. Their mission is to “... offer children and adolescent survivors of situations of social risk, protection factors under the family modality, strengthening their rights and promoting their duties within a comprehensive approach.”

The middle schoolers played soccer and jump rope games with the older children, had arts and crafts with the preschool children, and also fed the infants as well as put them down for their nap.
We also had a lovely lunch overlooking a spectacular view and were wowed by an even lovelier view at the Mirador De Orosi lookout point.

Here Clem, Iris, Jay, Phoebe, and Simone share the day’s events...

Con pura vida,

Alex

This morning we got up, ate breakfast, and got on the road to the orphanage. It was about an hour, and when we got there, we got a tour of the facilities. We saw the houses; there were 15 houses with about 8-9 kids each, with each having a house mother. We learned a lot about how the orphanage works. We also learned about the school and what activities the kids play after the school day is done. There are a lot of kids that we met from the ages of 2-18. There were a lot of kids at the orphanage, in total there were 105 kids there. Then we split up into groups. The first group helped out with the infant and toddler daycare center. The second played games with some of the children in the gym.

After our activities, we got together and went to lunch at a restaurant. Then after we ate, we chased some chickens around and looked at all the other animals that there were. Next, we got back in the van and drove to a little outlook where you could see down into the whole valley. It was an amazing view. Then, we started to drive back to the orphanage.

When we got there, we all got to take a look inside the houses that the kids live in. They asked some questions about the U.S., and we asked them some questions about Costa Rica. After that, we started to head back to the court area to play some games. It's dark and bumpy, so please excuse any typos. The kids are all wiped out and silent, so this installment is purely mine.

We had a most excellent day that began with a 6:44 a.m. pickup. We traveled in our small bus to Jacó on the Pacific coast, which took about two and a half hours. Once there, we began our zip line tour by gearing up in our harnesses and receiving an orientation. We then proceeded up the mountain on an aerial tram. During the journey to the top, our guides pointed out vegetation and wildlife. Once at the top, we began the zip line portion. All told, we each went down approximately ten different sections. It was amazing to watch, as all participants embraced the challenge. The energy and joy were palpable. Once we reached the bottom, soaked in sweat and smiles, we visited their butterfly garden, seeing blue morphos among others.

Following our zip line adventure, we boarded our bus and headed to a resort on Punta Leona beach. We ate an excellent buffet lunch and then headed to the beach for the rest of the day and early evening. The ocean was beautiful and the water was warm. The kids played in the waves for hours, thoroughly enjoying the entire experience. We finished by watching a beautiful sunset over the Pacific Ocean, a fitting end to our final full day.

Once we arrive in San Jose, we'll all pack and go to bed ready for our return to Chicago. As of now, our flights are on time and we hope our travels are smooth. Please be sure to follow our flights so you can be aware of any delays. Otherwise, we plan to be on the ground at O'Hare shortly after 8:00.

Please enjoy these photos from today, and we can't wait to see all of you.

Thank you again for your support and for trusting us with your amazing kids. We are grateful to have shared this amazing journey.

All my best,

Jeff

Junior Elementary at Alcuin Montessori

https://www.alcuin.org/alcuin-blog/junior-elementary-at-alcuin-montessori5388477

https://www.alcuin.org/alcuin-blog/junior-elementary-at-alcuin-montessori5388477#comments

Uncategorized

We are re-posting some of our most popular blog posts...Walking into an Alcuin Junior Elementary classroom, one is immediately struck by two things: there is a busy hum of activity, and the children are engaged and happy. As children move through age six, they enter the second plane of development in which imagination and reasoning are used to gain knowledge and information. The Junior Elementary program gives these abilities priority in the child’s learning process, fostering a [...]

We are re-posting some of our most popular blog posts...

Walking into an Alcuin Junior Elementary classroom, one is immediately struck by two things: there is a busy hum of activity, and the children are engaged and happy.

As children move through age six, they enter the second plane of development in which imagination and reasoning are used to gain knowledge and information. The Junior Elementary program gives these abilities priority in the child’s learning process, fostering an interest in facts and factual relationships. According to Dr. Maria Montessori, this is the time to sow the seeds of culture.

“What I think is special is all the kids are so kind, all the good lessons are so cool, all the people are so nice, and all the peace.”

“What I like about Junior Elementary is that I get to do handwriting and Spanish and landforms and small bead frame!”

“I like Junior Elementary because we get to cook, use the microscope, and do experiments. We get to grow crystals and go on field trips. We get to have school pets and great lessons.”

The above quotes are from Alcuin first, second, and third-grade members of our Junior Elementary program.

Alcuin’s Junior Elementary teachers make sure the children’s academic work is balanced but also empower them to make their own choices. The children are taught independence and how to manage their time. They manage their daily goals and their week’s worth of work. They are positively challenged academically, socially, and emotionally.

In addition to a strong academic curriculum, the children's social skills are enhanced through an emphasis on independent learning, cooperative group relationships and personal responsibility. A sense of respect and collaboration creates a social community that encourages cooperation rather than competition. The children work collaboratively, showing that they can work well with peers and enjoy their time in the classroom. They are learning and having fun in the process. Self-discipline, independent work habits, and self-direction are required of the children in these classes.

Junior Elementary teacher, Nicole Cochrane, states, “I love in Junior Elementary that we are teaching them how to maneuver the difficulty of socializing. At 6-9 years old the children are learning how to socialize, they care what others think of them, and they have a strong sense of justice. The teachers guide the children in standing up for what they believe but in a peaceful and respectful manner. When social mistakes are made, we teach the children how to request a peace talk and let someone know they are upset. We also teach the children how to give meaningful apologies and reflect on their behavior.”

The Junior Elementary children also benefit from the strong peace curriculum offered. At Alcuin, there isn’t just one unit on peace. It is interwoven into everything the children do and equally as important as learning to read, write, or solve math equations. The children are taught how to be the best they can be, how to act and react in difficult situations, how to be a good friend and classmate, and how to have respect for themselves, for others, and for the environment.

Resourcefulness, problem-solving, self-advocacy, compromise, listening skills, executive functioning, conflict resolution – the children in our Junior Elementary program are fortunate that along with great academic preparation, they are also given the skills they will need throughout their lives from childhood to adulthood.

7 Tips for Picking the Right Montessori School

https://www.alcuin.org/alcuin-blog/7-tips-for-picking-the-right-montessori-school9542742

https://www.alcuin.org/alcuin-blog/7-tips-for-picking-the-right-montessori-school9542742#comments

Uncategorized

We are re-posting some of our most popular blog posts...At some point in your child's life, whether they were two or even 11, you knew self-directed, hands-on learning and collaborative play were non-negotiable factors in picking their school. So, you opted for a Montessori program, which was developed with those principles in mind. However, as you began your search in the Oak Park River Forest area, you soon noticed that Montessori schools are popular educational choices, and therefore, they exist in great number.

"What sets a Montessori curriculum apart is the emphasis on the social and emotional growth of the student in tandem with their academic learning," explains Gina Gleason, head of Alcuin Montessori in Oak Park. "From birth through middle school, we inspire a lifelong curiosity about learning, while nurturing each child's individual strengths, challenging them to reach their fullest potential."
With a number of Montessori schools in the Oak Park River Forest area, it is important to research and visit as many as possible to gain a very clear understanding of what school is the best fit for your child.

Alejandra Valera, head of admissions for Alcuin Montessori, shares these tips for finding the best Montessori school suited for your child's unique needs.

1. What does the classroom's appearance say?
If a picture is worth a thousand words, seeing a true Montessori classroom in action is worth volumes. It's one thing to read about a school online, but visiting a school in person will help you get a sense of what your child will experience on a daily basis.

A few tips to prepare for your visit:

Tour the school and go inside the classrooms, preferably when the children are there so that you can get a feel for the environment and the energy of the children.

How do teachers interact with children?

What's the quality of the Montessori materials, the care given to the environment, and the beauty and simplicity of the classrooms?

Talk to the teachers and other parents.

Ask if you will be allowed to observe the classrooms throughout the year when your child is enrolled.

2. How authentic is the Montessori program?
The term "Montessori" isn't trademarked, therefore, any program can call itself Montessori without being a true Montessori school. To be sure you are choosing an authentic program, explore the school's website and ask questions during the tour, such as:

What accrediting bodies oversee the school? A well-established, authentic Montessori school will be recognized by either the American Montessori Society (AMS) or the Association Montessori International (AMI). Some, like Alcuin, even take it a step further and undertake a more additional rigorous accreditation process by AMS or AMI, as well as by organizations like the Independent Schools Association of the Central States (ISACS).

Are the teachers all fully credentialed/certified Montessori teachers? What are the qualifications for someone to teach at the school? While you can learn a lot about Montessori philosophy from books, it takes years of practice and mentorships for teachers to truly master this method of child-centered education. Each classroom should be led by an experienced Montessori teacher.

What type of professional development opportunities are offered to the staff?
Like their students, Montessori teachers love to learn. A quality school provides support for ongoing professional development opportunities to help their staff stay at the top of their game, making their school a better place for their students.

3. Is the school safe?
In addition to being loved and nurtured, we all want our kids to be safe. During your tour, find out:

What types of safety procedures and protocols are in place?

How often are they reviewed and updated?

Who oversees the process?

4. What is the community like?
To get a sense of the school's culture, ask questions like:

How would you describe the school community?

What level of involvement do you expect and allow from parents?

How do the teachers communicate with me about my child's development?

Am I allowed and encouraged to build a relationship with my child's teacher/school?

What type of parent education and volunteer opportunities are available?

If the faculty and staff have children, do (or did) they attend the school?

Can you put me in touch with other parents at the school to get a sense of the community from an insider's perspective?

5. What type of enrichment or after-school activities are offered?
Reading, writing, and arithmetic aren't the only things a child should learn - exposure to new ideas and experiences help children become well-rounded individuals.

Ask how the following are integrated into the curriculum and whether extracurricular opportunities exist:

Culture and foreign language

Physical activity

Theater

Music

Art

Philanthropy

Peace education

Problem-solving

Field trips and other activities outside of school

Before- and after-school care (whether hourly as-needed or flat fee)

Parent education

6. What is the admissions process like?
The admission process itself is a great indicator of how the school itself is run. Throughout the process, ask yourself:

Are my interactions with the admissions staff and administration thorough, professional, timely, and supportive?

Does the admissions process seem organized and efficient?

Is the information on the website comprehensive?

7. Can you envision your child here?
This is the most important question of all. Follow your instinct in making a decision about what school is best for your child and your family. Can you picture your child in these classrooms? Is the faculty and staff warm, welcoming, and professional in their pursuit of Montessori excellence? Can you picture yourself and your family as a valued part of this community?

Alcuin Montessori School in Oak Park, now in its 56th year in serving Oak Park, the western suburbs and Chicago, is hosting open enrollment for children ages 0-14. Author, journalist, and historian Carter G. Woodson spearheaded the initiative to establish a whole month of honor. He is known most notably as the "Father" of Black History due to his influential work (Scott, 2011). Today, there are 48.2 million African American people in the U.S.; from 2020 to 2060, Black Americans will contribute to more than 20 percent of the total U.S. population growth (Nielsen, 2020).

At Alcuin Montessori, we put great effort into being inclusive and diverse in teaching Black history throughout the year. The smell of food from around the world, wafting from different classrooms, is enjoyed many a day.

Let's loop it back to books for a minute. Resources have gone digital, but we purposefully expose the children to as many physical books as possible at Alcuin through Middle School. Primary and Elementary classrooms are filled with beautiful picture books with diverse characters and authors. Infant and toddlers have a variety of multi-skin colored board books. Middle School gets into the more profound and complex texts in their literature studies.

Some favorites are:

Of Thee I Sing by Barack Obama

Unspoken by Henry Cole

Sojourner Truth's Step-Stomp Stride by Andrea Davis Pinkney & Brian Pinkney

Lift Your Light a Little Higher by Heather Henson

Sing a Song by Kelly Starling Lyons

The 1916 Project Born on the Water by Nikole Hannah Jones and Renee Watson.

Stamped (for Kids) by Jason Reynolds and Ibram X. Each child settles into their routine within a space they see as welcoming and safe.

Alcuin Montessori has had an infant or toddler program of some sort since the 1990s, but our full-time, all-year program officially launched in October 2019 at our brand new Roosevelt campus. Apart from all-star care, this DCFS-licensed program provides learning experiences in an environment that is cheerful, inviting, and rich with opportunities to explore. Alcuin is not a daycare, but rather a school with a full Montessori curriculum.

Toddlers explore their burgeoning independence while they work on care of self and their environment. Classroom shelves are low and easily accessible with beautiful works that encourage exploration. They learn to dress themselves, help one another with zippers and coats, bus their dishes, tend to the classroom plants, and lovingly wash the baby doll. There is a steady hum of activity as busy hands get to work. Toddlers develop their cognitive skills while they focus for long periods and sit, wholly engaged, in whatever lesson they are receiving.

For infants, the setting is homelike with soft rugs, a rocking chair, books arrayed on low shelves, and toys in baskets. The space is organized and uncluttered. The infants explore the cylinder blocks, push toys, and manipulate objects. They begin to work on drinking from a cup—not a sippy cup, but a child-sized cup. Gross motor work includes bars for pulling up, mirrors to reflect body movement, a sleeping area with individual cribs, and child-sized tables and chairs rather than high chairs. It’s a beautiful world curated with them in mind.

Infant and toddler’s brain develop more quickly during their first three years than at any other time, and this incredible time in their lives sets the foundation for their absorbent mind and all future learning. Their minds absorb! The children watch and grow. They form strong relationships with their teachers and the other children, and learn to love their community.

Part of my time spent at Alcuin is checking in the infant and toddler children every day. I do their health screenings and walk them into their classrooms. It is my favorite part of the morning. Vair waves goodbye to his father as he rushes to class to take off his outside shoes all by himself. Cleo insists on carrying the heavy snack bags, even though it is quite the feat. Zel, who is still somewhat new, strides in—her confidence growing more and more each day. Oh, to have the amount of self-trust, enthusiasm, and strength our infants and toddlers display—the smallest of role models; small but mighty. The group was driven, innovative, curious, and without fail stopped at nothing to provide a level of Montessori education and excellence like no other. They did not let setbacks get in their way, nor did they take no for an answer. They did not follow what all other educational systems were doing, and they created a plan based on what they knew was best for the children and then set out to put the plan in place. Our founders insisted on the absolute best teaching staff, an incredibly beautiful and meticulously designed classroom, and an exceptional curriculum to meet the needs of all their children’s individual learning styles.

Fast forward to 2020, Alcuin is still going strong and providing in-person Montessori excellence during a pandemic. These words may surprise some or worry some. It may make you question the decision of the leaders of our school. However, I am here to share our story of continued focus and diligence in meeting the child’s needs. In early summer, we were provided with the reopening guidelines, just like every other school, daycare, and business in Illinois. We put a plan in place for how we would follow those guidelines, how we would keep our children and staff safe and healthy, and how we would meet the increased financial obligations with a decreased enrollment capacity. More importantly, we planned for how we would continue to provide our Montessori pedagogy to the highest degree with all of the new regulations and health concerns. We surrounded ourselves with a team of people dedicated to this process, and after countless hours, we presented this plan to our families and welcomed them back to our school community.

Many were thrilled to be back to in-person learning, and others were not quite ready to return. We’ve made a plan that worked for almost all of our families and had a deep respect for any family’s decision during this time. We entered those first few school days with slight trepidation as we didn’t know what to expect. How would the children feel about the changes to their physical environment? Could even our youngest 2-year-olds keep their masks on? Could we all adapt to keeping close while staying a safe distance away? What was most important was that our entire community of staff and families were on board. We held an open communication line between staff and families and insisted on a “we are all in this together” mantra.

We are so fortunate and pleased to say that Alcuin being open for in-person learning is truly a beautiful, and successful, story. Our children are happy to come to school every morning. They are thriving in their academic journeys, and they are immersed in much-needed social and emotional development. It’s been an incredible time for our school over the last eight months. We’ve grown and adapted in ways we’d never imagined.

The children are, and always will be, our top focus; COVID has not changed this. Our routines are slightly different. There’s additional cleaning and sanitizing, but that’s not such a stretch for a Montessori classroom to begin with. Our children easily follow the health and safety guidelines that we put in place, and our staff are the most amazing humans you will ever meet. It seems that the new norm is now the norm, and we are comfortable in our process and confident in our decision to remain open and provide this learning experience for our students.

We have had two positive cases so far, and both children presented mild symptoms for just a couple of days and easily recovered. None of the positive cases were spread to any other students, or staff, in our school community. Upon learning of a positive case, or exposure, our staff moves quickly into action for quarantining and beginning remote learning. It’s an entirely seamless process, and our children don’t miss a beat.

We have a few remaining spaces in some of our levels and are always happy to share more information and answer questions about Alcuin. We have a rich history in the Oak Park community, and we will continue to put our roots deep into the ground. We’ve embraced the challenges of COVID and found a way to rise above and continue our Alcuin journey. This is the world we live in. We’ve chosen to embrace it and make the most of it, and live our lives of commitment to providing our Alcuin students with the best possible Montessori education.

Gina Gleason
Executive Director
